For many boilies, I use propylene glycol as the main carrier and glycerin as the smaller supporting liquid.
My practical milk-and-nut direction has been approximately 20 ml food-grade propylene glycol and 10 ml food-grade glycerin for a recipe built around 1 kg of dry mix. Those quantities form part of the complete egg-and-liquid phase. They are not universal requirements or validated preservative dosages.
Use only products clearly identified as suitable for food use; where applicable, choose material that meets USP or FCC specifications.
Propylene Glycol vs Glycerin in Carp Bait: The Core Difference

Propylene glycol and glycerin are polyols. Their structures allow them to interact with water, which is why both can function as humectants and remain compatible with many water-based bait liquids.
The practical difference is how strongly each changes the physical character of the liquid system.
Propylene glycol is the lighter carrier
Propylene glycol is also known as 1,2-propanediol. The US food regulation lists functions that include humectant, solvent and vehicle, flavor agent, formulation aid, texturizer and processing support.

Those functions describe why it is useful in bait. Propylene glycol pours cleanly, measures easily and disperses through beaten egg without giving the liquid phase the same heavy syrup consistency as glycerin.
I favor it when I need to:
- carry a measured fruit, cream, spice or savory flavor;
- keep a hookbait spray fluid;
- distribute small additions through the egg phase;
- make a lighter glug that does not immediately form a heavy coating;
- condition hard hookbaits without using plain water as the main carrier.
Propylene glycol is not vegetable oil. It does not add the same fat load as hemp, nut or fish oil.
It should also not be expected to repair an unstable oil-and-water mixture by itself. Where significant oil is present, review the oil level and emulsification system rather than asking the carrier to solve the complete problem.
Glycerin is the heavier, sweeter carrier
Glycerol is the chemical name, while glycerin is the common commercial term used for food and formulation products containing glycerol.

In practical bait making, glycerin is more viscous and gives the liquid system a sweeter, more syrup-like character.
I use it when I want:
- more cling on a boilie or hookbait;
- a thicker hookbait conditioner;
- better adhesion for a fine powder coating;
- some flexibility in heavily dried hookbaits;
- a smooth sweet background in a milk, nut, cream or fruit treatment.
The same properties can become disadvantages. Excess glycerin may create sticky paste, leave a heavy external film or allow a hookbait to absorb enough dense liquid to alter its balance.
Why a blend often works best
A propylene-glycol-led blend offers a useful middle ground.
The propylene glycol keeps the liquid mobile and easier to distribute. The glycerin adds body, sweetness and persistence.
This can suit milk-and-nut glugs, fruit-and-cream hookbait liquids, powder coatings and conditioners that need more cling than pure propylene glycol without becoming as heavy as straight glycerin.
The ratio should follow the job. A spray needs to atomize. A glug needs enough movement to coat the bait evenly. A hookbait soak may benefit from additional cling. The original boilie liquid phase needs to remain rollable and repeatable.
What the Carriers Do Inside a Boilie
Propylene glycol and glycerin become part of the complete wet phase. They should not be treated as invisible additives that sit outside the liquid calculation.
A recipe described as “eight eggs per kilogram” may also contain tiger nut extract, liquid yeast, hydrolysate, syrup, flavor, acid solution, propylene glycol and glycerin.
The paste receives all of those liquids.
For repeatable formulation, weigh the shell-free eggs and record the complete liquid package. Where accuracy matters, weighing propylene glycol and glycerin is better than assuming that every milliliter of every liquid weighs exactly one gram.
Paste softness and handling
At modest levels, propylene glycol can improve liquid distribution and add lubrication without dramatically changing the paste.
Glycerin generally has a more obvious effect on tackiness and softness. That may be useful in a dry, dense hookbait paste but unnecessary in a base mix that already contains syrup, cream powder, full-fat soy, nut flour and a substantial egg phase.
Do not use glycerin automatically to repair a paste that feels dry immediately after mixing. Nut meals, milk powders, birdfood and fibers continue absorbing liquid while the paste rests.
Give the paste time to hydrate before deciding that it needs more liquid.
Flavor carrying and distribution
Propylene glycol is particularly useful for distributing small quantities of concentrated flavor through the larger egg-and-liquid phase.
Glycerin can also carry flavor, but its greater thickness may be more appropriate for a hookbait pot than a fine misting spray.
Neither ingredient makes every flavor molecule genuinely water-soluble. Commercial flavors may contain water-compatible compounds, oil-soluble fractions, emulsions or multiple carriers.
The carrier helps delivery and distribution. It does not change the chemistry of every flavor component.
Humectancy and finished texture
Humectants interact with water and can change the way moisture is retained and made available inside the bait.
This may help a heavily dried hookbait remain less brittle. It can also make the drying process appear slower because the bait retains a more flexible feel.
A softer feel does not automatically mean the bait is unstable, and a hard feel does not prove low water activity. Texture and storage stability must be tested separately.

Choosing a Carrier for Sprays, Glugs and Hookbaits

The useful question is not which carrier is universally better.
The useful question is what the liquid needs to accomplish.

Sprays
Propylene glycol is normally the stronger starting point for sprays because it remains more fluid.
A small glycerin addition can increase persistence, but too much may reduce atomization or block a fine sprayer.
Filter homemade sprays where necessary and test the actual bottle before preparing a large batch.
Glugs and powder coatings
Propylene glycol produces a lighter coating. Glycerin increases cling and gives dry powder more opportunity to remain attached.
For one kilogram of finished boilies, begin with a light application rather than pouring on a large volume. Shake the bait until it is evenly coated, then add powder gradually.
Suitable dry coating materials may include milk powder, yeast, tiger nut flour, finely powdered liver, betaine or boilie crumb.
The objective is a thin food coating—not a heavy wet shell that changes the bait into a different storage product.
Hookbait conditioners
A hard bottom bait may benefit from gradual liquid absorption. Wafters and pop-ups require more caution because any absorbed liquid adds mass and can change buoyancy.
After conditioning, test the hookbait with the exact hook, bait screw, hair stop and rig components.
A conditioner has failed its practical job if it turns a balanced wafter into an ordinary bottom bait or softens the bait enough to weaken its attachment.

PVA use
Do not assume that a liquid is PVA-compatible merely because propylene glycol or glycerin is the main carrier.
Water-rich hydrolysates, extracts, syrups and acid solutions can change how the complete mixture behaves.
Apply the finished liquid to the actual PVA bag, mesh or tape and leave it for at least as long as the prepared rig will be stored before casting.
Test the completed mixture—not the carrier name.

A freezer bait that already mixes, rolls and freezes correctly may not need either liquid. Do not add a carrier merely because it appears in another recipe.
My milk-and-nut working point
My practical direction has been:
- 20 ml food-grade propylene glycol;
- 10 ml food-grade glycerin;
for a recipe built around 1 kg of dry mix.
This keeps propylene glycol in the main carrier role while the smaller glycerin inclusion adds body without making the liquid phase excessively syrupy.
It is practical formulation experience from my own milk, nut and birdfood bait. It does not prove that the same level is correct for another formula or that the bait is stable at room temperature.
A 100 ml short-term hookbait conditioner

Adjust the propylene glycol so the finished total remains 100 ml. Do not assume that every concentrated flavor is appropriate at 5 ml.
This is a development starting point for durable hookbaits—not a validated shelf-life liquid.
Use it lightly. When the 15 ml liquid-food portion contains substantial water, treat the mixture as short-term, keep it cool and inspect it before use.
Discard any mixture that develops gas, mold, abnormal fermentation, package swelling or an unexpected spoiled odor.
For wafters and pop-ups, begin with a light coating rather than fully submerging the bait.
Preservation and Water-Activity Limits

Propylene glycol and glycerin are often described casually as preservatives. That description is incomplete.
Both can influence water activity when used at sufficient concentration. They interact with water and can make some of it less available within the finished formula.
They do not automatically control microorganisms in the same way as potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate, and small bait-making additions do not prove a sufficiently low water activity.

A moist boilie containing egg, milk powder, nut flour, sugars and hydrolysates remains a nutrient-rich product. Adding 20 ml of propylene glycol and 10 ml of glycerin does not turn it automatically into a six-month shelf-life bait.
True ambient-storage development still depends on:
- clean ingredients and equipment;
- controlled cooking;
- measured drying;
- water activity;
- pH where relevant;
- appropriate antimicrobial preservatives;
- protective packaging;
- retained samples checked through the intended storage period.

Freezer bait
In freezer bait, these carriers are normally used for flavor delivery, liquid distribution or texture—not to replace freezing.
Make the bait cleanly, dry it enough for handling, package it in session-sized quantities and freeze it promptly.
Glugged bait
Adding a water-rich glug to a stable dried boilie creates a new moisture system.
The bait may absorb water, soluble nutrients and dense carrier liquid. Use freshly treated free bait promptly, keep it cool when necessary and never return damp leftovers to the original dry bag.
Hookbait pots
A sealed hookbait pot does not guarantee stability.
Use small clean containers, avoid repeatedly introducing damp fingers or dirty baiting needles and make only the amount of conditioner needed.

The cleanest test is a controlled comparison using the same dry mix.

Keep the complete wet-phase weight as consistent as possible. When adding a carrier, reduce another suitable liquid so that the comparison does not simply become a wetter batch.
Record paste tackiness, extrusion pressure, rolling performance, surface character after cooking, drying rate, final hardness and any difference after immersion.

Common mistakes
Treating the two carriers as identical: Their viscosity, sweetness, coating and paste effects differ.
Using an unidentified or non-food-grade product: Purchase clearly labelled food-grade, USP or FCC-suitable material from a reputable source.
Calling either liquid a complete preservative: They may influence water availability but do not replace a measured shelf-life system.
Ignoring the complete wet phase: Eggs, hydrolysates, extracts, syrups, oils and carriers all affect the finished paste.
Using glycerin to repair paste before it has rested: The formula may need hydration time rather than more sweetness and tackiness.
Using propylene glycol to justify excessive flavor: Better distribution does not make an overloaded flavor level sensible.
Drowning finished boilies: A thin coating is usually easier to control than a heavy wet treatment.
Ignoring hookbait buoyancy: Absorbed liquid adds weight and can change wafters and pop-ups.
Assuming the carrier guarantees PVA compatibility: Test the completed mixture with the actual PVA material.
Keeping homemade conditioner indefinitely: Small, clean and clearly dated batches are easier to control.
My Practical View
I do not regard propylene glycol and glycerin as competing ingredients where one must always replace the other.
Propylene glycol is my main choice when I need a clean, fluid carrier for flavors, extracts, sprays or a controlled boilie liquid phase.
Glycerin is useful when I want more body, sweetness, cling or gradual softening in a specialist hookbait treatment.
For milk, nut and cream bait, the two often work well together in a propylene-glycol-led blend.
My 20 ml propylene glycol plus 10 ml glycerin direction is a practical working point because it supports the liquid phase without asking the carriers to preserve the entire boilie by themselves.
I would use more carrier in a specialist hookbait conditioner than in bulk free bait. I would use less—or none—when a freezer bait already mixes, rolls, dries and stores correctly.
Propylene glycol carries and controls. Glycerin thickens and clings. Neither replaces good formulation, testing or storage.
