Blowback Rig for Michigan Carp
Why this rig works
The blowback is just a hair rig with one improvement: the bait can slide back on the shank, giving the hook more room to turn and take hold.
Quick Start
- Hook: size 6 wide gape
- Hooklink: 6–8″ coated braid
- Rig ring: small ring on the shank
- Bait: bottom bait or wafter
- Use it when: fish are “pricking” you and getting away
Tackle list
- Wide gape hook (4–8)
- Coated braid (15–25 lb)
- Small rig ring
- Bait floss (optional)
- Kicker/shrink (optional)
Step-by-step
- Slide a rig ring onto the hook.
- Tie a small hair loop.
- Position the ring on the shank (around the middle).
- Tie a knotless knot (7–9 turns).
- Add a small kicker/shrink (optional) and steam a gentle curve.
- Bait it: bottom bait on the hair, stop it, check the ring can move freely.
When it shines
- Clear gravel/sand where fish inspect baits
- When you’re getting runs but losing fish mid-fight
- When you want a “better hair rig” without going stiff or complex
Common mistakes
- Ring jammed tight (it must slide)
- Hair too long (again—short is usually better)
- Hookpoint dulled on gravel/mussels
- Over-steaming shrink until it kinks
Michigan Notes
If you’ve got mussels or sharp gravel, check the hook point every cast. “Good enough” isn’t good enough on pressured public water.
FAQ
Do I need floss?
No—use floss if you want perfectly balanced wafters.
Will it tangle more?
Not if you keep it tidy and your hooklink isn’t too long.
Is it only for bottom baits?
Mostly, yes. For pop-ups you’re usually better with a Ronnie/Spinner.
