150+ runs, loads of bigguns, best fishing trip of my life!!!Hello All, The Story starts from a simple phone call from fellow Michigan Member Don early last week. During the conversation Don mentioned he was thinking about spending the weekend fishing the Saginaw River (my Favorite fishery). A lot has happened in my life these past 8 months which has kept me extremely busy and stressed out and has limited my fishing down to once or twice a month, so after getting off the phone with Don the bug had set in and set in hard it did. All I could think about was fishing for a 2 or 3 day session which is something I have never done before and thinking of the future, something that will likely never happen for at least another year so I started planning. The forcast for the weekend should have detered me from my trip as major thunderstorms, high winds, very low drop in temps and a late spring all should have factored into me staying home. I usually start fishing the Saginaw river in late May/early June as earlier experiences were never all that productive. So, my thinking was I would find a new spot on the river closer to the Bay (Saginaw Bay..part of Lake Huron). I honestly knew nothing about fishing the river or what spots I would find that far down. The Preparation for the trip seemed to last forever and finally on Thursday night I had the truck loaded and ready for my early morning escape to my adventure. I awoke at 4am and left by 5am Friday. I arrived at my original spot on the river and scoped it out at around 6:25am. Absolutely nothing was moving…Dang, well stick to the game plan and keep heading closer to the bay. A few more stops farther down with the same results..got dang!! Keep driving I did and finally I found what looked to be the perfect new swim so I hopped out of the truck and grabbed my rod. The location was perfect looking but I needed to test the water for snags and water depth. After a few casts and whatnot I was confident this is where I was going to set up. As I turned my back I heard the sweet sound of a fish crashing After an hour of setting up the bivvy, base camp and preparing some method mixes I started the tedious chumming process. 20 minutes after I got my rods in the water I got my first run and boy was I was overly excited. A scrapper 7 lber was landed and on the release my other rod went off…another little fella. The Haul fest began and before Don arrived at 1pm I had already banked a couple 20’s and loads of others. After the introduction of Don’s stepson Brett they were soon set-up and they joined in on the fishing action. Don made us up potatoes and fresh fish fillets for dinner After dinner the rains would start and the winds picked up drawing a bit of a lull in the action and then a Ginormous Barge made its way slowly down the river churning the bottom and turning the river into a muddy mess. It caused a dead stop in the action for a couple hours and we decided to switch to big baits for the night and settle down for some sleep. The last run came at around 9:20PM ending my day total at 30 runs. Not sure How many Don and Brett had, but somewhere around the 15 mark. At 2:20 in the morning I was awoke with a screaming run and after that no sleep for the whole rest of the day Sat Alex arrived right before Nightfall and setup base his base camp in the dark right before the storms started, soon after he was into the fish as well. The weather was crappy for the majority of the day and by nightfall the temps dropped to 40 At around 5 am I awoke frozen and went about to get my rods back in the water and soon after the runs began again. The weather was really cold but the rains had stopped and with the action I started to warm up. At around 6am Don and Brett awoke, baited up and were soon into fish. We had Don try out a new Grit recipe with a Triple B flavor and his next 3 fish were Quality…a 25+,23+ and a 21+. Those grits did him proud and he continued to haul em in At around 2ish Don would pack up and head home and as I was giving him some ready made grit packages I heard my rod go screaming off so afted a hurried goodbye I ran to my rod and lifted into my biggest fish of the session which gave me a fantastic lengthy fight…whoo hoo, my biggest of the year so far I want to thank Don and Brett for the comradery and food, it all boiled down to the best fishing experience of my life. Thank You!! Many baits were tested out, including Peanut Butter Boilies, Artificials, Aarons Dough Baits, different Bread Packs, Grit packs, SCM, Triple B Flavor, Anise Flavoring, 45-50mm Donkey Chokers First up are a couple pics of big Dons fish and Bretts 25lb 4 ozer. Next up are some pics of the mirrors. A few of the 20’s And my biggest of the trip at nearly 30lb and over 37 inches. Bivvy forum member Tree’s 27lb 10ozI had not been to my spot in Milford at the Huron River in some time, so me and Brandon decided to head out there tonight. I arrived at the spot around 3:45pm and ate some Taco Bell (I got one of them Big Bell Box Meals mmmmm yummy). 4pm I start walking down to my spot with the gear. Oh yeah, I went to the Feed store today and got my chicken feed but like a dummy did not make sure it was crumbles, guess what it was pellets. So I was a little nervous of how well it was going to pack. I had a little bit of oats and crumbles left so I mixed the pellets with that, added one can of cream corn and some grape kool aid, of curse. The mix was packing well so I got my pod set up by now it was 5pm and I need to get some lines in so that’s what I did. Brandon showed up at 6pm, so I walked up to his truck to give him a hand with his gear. He had a Big Bell Box Meal from Taco Bell so we talked wile he ate it at the truck. 6:30pm we just got back to the River where my pod was set up …. Beep Beep Beep Beep …. It’s my left rod woohoo first one of the day, I lean into a real solid fish. Brandon had just got down there and was getting ready to set up his gear, but instead he grabbed the net. It was a good fighter with lots of power and weight, we finally got her in the net and we had our first fish of the day. She went 19lbs 1oz nice one! Now that fish came on my left rod, but before I sent my bait out I wanted to test one of my baits that worked really well for me last year but I had not done well with in 2008, My Grape Growlers. After about 45minutes or so that same rod with the two Grape Tigers on got a run. It was another good fish, but sadly it ended up tangled with my other line witch ended up being caught on a big log, I said “this is not going to end well”. Sure thing it was a 18 to 20lb fish but came off right before we could get it near the net and as far as the line on the log, I had to straighten the hook out the get the rig free. So after I got all that sorted out my lines were back in and this time both with Growlers. Brandon did get some action on his rod, we figured it was line bumps, but as it kept on thumping his rod tip we knew it was most likely at bullhead. So he leaned back to make sure and yep Bullhead. A few hours went by and I had landed two more nice fish a 17lber and a 14lber both on the Grape Growlers. Now we were getting near the end of the trip it was 10:30pm and I started to pack up. I washed out my buckets, took two bank sticks out of my Ruck Sack and set my rods on them wile I took the pod down, just to give my baits a little more time in the water. That’s when I noticed my right rod tip bouncing. Beep… Beep…. Brandon runs to his rod. BeepBeepBeepBeepBeepBeepBeep…..he leans back got it. I start to go for the net when I hear mine Beep Beep Beep Whoa! I run back to my rod and it’s just slowly taking line. So I pick it up and lean back, it was like I was stuck on a rock but the rock was moving, slowly. “Brandon I think I got a BIG one”. I yelled “Oh no I lost mine”! Brandon said as he runs to his bait bucket to get his line back out. But he did not realize that the fish had broken off his hook. So he grabs the net and helps out with my BIG fish. By this time the fish is coming straight for us, and then he stops and just sits there. I could not move him “WOW its A GOOD ONE”. I said as I just waited for the fish to move again. “Ok hear he comes Brandon”. I said as he got right to the net, WHOOOSHHH! So close. Back out he went, again I brought her close to the net and this time we got her. “Is it a big one”? I asked Brandon “YEAHhhhh” was all he said as we walked the fish to the mat. We both looked at each other and said”WOW that’s a big fish”! I wanted pictures but all I had was my camera phone and it dose not take good shots in the dark. Brandon suggested taking it to the pavilion witch had good lighting. So I put her in my sling and away we went, after a few photos I took her back to the mat where we poured some water on her. Then I zeroed out my sling and put her in for a weight, 27lbs 10oz is what my scale said. WOW, WHAT A BEAST!! This is the second biggest fish I have ever landed and the biggest I ever got to weigh. 1st picture is my 19lb 1oz fish and the last two are the 27lb 10oz beast. Barton pond Ann ArborWell today was The Michigans chapters 2nd fish-in of the year. Barton Pond is a Reservoir in the state of Michigan (county of Washtenaw) and is new water for the Michigan chapter and it deserves more time latter this summer. The day started alittle on the cool side but soon warmed up alittle but was somewhat windy for most of the day. Andy (Tree) was the Angler of the day taking 5 fish and 2oz under 20lb was his biggest of the day and this was big enough to take our site pot that we had running. Tim and Nikki both had nice hard fighting fish coming to the net. All in all a great day was had by all and everyone had agood time on this new water. Tree’s Fish Nikki’s Barton Carp Tim’s Fat Boy |
