Particles are one of the biggest “edge” baits in Michigan because they let you feed a lot of attraction for the money, and they keep carp grubbing confidently for longer than single-hookbait fishing. But particles also come with one non-negotiable rule: prep them safely.

What counts as “particles”?
- Grains: maize (corn), wheat, barley
- Seeds: hemp, millet, mixed birdseed
- Legumes: maple peas, chickpeas
- Nuts: tiger nuts (special case)
Safety first: the 3 rules
- Soak long enough (dry particles swell in fish)
- Cook until soft enough (especially maize and legumes)
- Store correctly (avoid souring unless you’re deliberately fermenting)
Standard prep method (works for most mixes)
Step 1 — Soak
Cover particles with plenty of water (they expand). Add a splash of salt or a spoon of sugar if you like, but it’s optional at this stage.
- Maize: 24 hours
- Wheat/barley: 12–24 hours
- Maple peas/chickpeas: 24 hours
- Hemp: 8–12 hours
Step 2 — Boil / simmer
Bring to the boil, then simmer until the particles are soft enough to crush between your fingers (for maize and legumes). Hemp is done when you see plenty of white shoots (the “crack”).
- Maize: 30–45 minutes (varies by grain)
- Wheat/barley: 20–30 minutes
- Maple peas/chickpeas: 30–45 minutes
- Hemp: 20–30 minutes
Step 3 — Cool in the liquor
Let it cool in the cooking water (don’t drain immediately). The cloudy “liquor” is a free attractor.
Tiger nuts (special rules)
Tigers are brilliant for carp, but they need proper prep. A safe, simple method is: soak until fully hydrated, boil until softened, then allow to sit in their liquor to develop natural sugars. Keep everything clean and don’t rush the soak.
Two Michigan mixes that cover 90% of situations
Mix A — “All-round big-lake” (cheap + consistent)
- Maize (base)
- Wheat + barley (bulk + confidence)
- Small hemp % (sparkle + activity)
Best for: prebaiting and getting fish comfortable on an area.
Mix B — “Hard-bait confidence” (nuisance-resistant)
- Tiger nuts (a portion, not the whole mix)
- Maize
- Maple peas (or chickpeas)
Best for: waters with nuisance fish pecking soft baits.
How much to use (simple)
- Short session (2–6 hrs): a few handfuls around your rig, then top up lightly.
- Overnighter: a modest carpet at the start, then top-ups after action.
- Campaign (multi-day): small but consistent feeds beat huge dumps.
Storage (keep it safe)
- Short term: fridge in sealed buckets
- Long term: freeze in bags / containers
- If it smells “off” (not just sweet/sour), bin it.
