Muskegon River - Mecosta County Park Commission
General InformationThe second longest river in Michigan, the Muskegon offers a good opportunity for carp, particularly in the lower reaches from about Big Rapids down to the mouth at the city of Muskegon. The 3 major impoundments on the river offer perhaps the best carping, with Hardy pond and Croton pond being the best. Hardy pond offers the best bank access, with several major parks offering overnight camping and fishing, including Brower(Mecosta Co), Big Bend(Newyago Co.) and Newyago State Park(Newyago co.). All 3 of these offer excellent bank fishing opportunities. Furthermore, the river is blessed with extensive bank acreage owned by Consumers Energy, which is enrolled in the commercial forest act, which allows for public access during the day(unfortunately, this property is often closed at dusk). Further downstream, Muskegon Lake at the river mouth offers some of the finest general fishing in the midwest, which happens to include some very large carp potential. As it's directly connected to Lake Michigan, this lake as well as all of the sunken river mouth lakes of the west side of Michigan, offer the chance at the fish of a lifetime. There are a number of city parks with bank access, as well as extensive access via Muskegon State Park. Also..the piers at the outlet to Lake Michigan offer direct access to the big lake itself, further cementing this as a destination location for a carper willing to put in the effort to sus out this almost oceanic water.
